Our house has a large wash behind it. There are a lot of critters who call it home including roadrunners and coyotes. It’s kind of like the real-life version of the cartoon without the bombs and falling anvils. I love roadrunners but when it comes to the pursuit of Financial Independence (FI) the coyote has more to offer than beep beep.
The Lessons of Wile E. Coyote
- Wile E. is incredibly focused on his goal – to catch and eat the roadrunner. Regardless of how many times the roadrunner thwarts him, he never loses his motivation. He just tries harder.
- He doesn’t fear failure. He never gives up.
- Wile E. always tries a new approach.
- On the other hand, he always goes about chasing the roadrunner by himself. He doesn’t have a support team to point out his weaknesses and to get better ideas. As a result he wastes a lot of time without making progress.
Whenever you experience doubt or frustration in your pursuit of FI, ask yourself “what would Wile E. Coyote do”? Would he give up or try again? Would he use the same tactics or try something different? But unlike Willi E, you have a proven weapon – the FIRE community. So the next time you feel like an anvil has fallen on your head, pick yourself up and check in with your friends in the FIRE community to plot your next move.
